Find your journey!

I embarked on the path of drawing and painting after doing a Paint by Numbers painting, you can read more about my experience in the post here. This led me to work with many mediums and some of my favorites included the pastels and acrylics.

Painting & drawing from techniques like Paint by Numbers

There are many amazing videos and tutorials that you can find online and there is no excuse, if your aim is to be good at drawing and painting. In this modern age of art, the digital medium has opened a whole world of creativity due to everyone owning a phone or a tablet.

Paint this boat scene but don’t worry about the details

In this Paint by Numbers of a boat scene, I would encourage you to take a look at the whole painting and try to draw based on what you can see instead of focusing on the exact paint by number patches. What I mean is that use the completed drawing shown in the featured image as a reference to do your drawing.

If you are a beginner, I suggest to try something easier such as the cartoon characters which have bigger regions for coloring. In this way, you will become comfortable with the tools and develop your own drawing style.

When doing this drawing on my phone or tablet, I usually have the corresponding featured drawing open elsewhere ie. on another tablet, TV or even a print out. Instead of doing the tiny patches of the numbers and trying to get it right, do the larger portions of color and then add patches of the small dots randomly over that area. You will notice that some of the contrasting shades of colors are due to the reflections of the sky, water etc. This will help you a lot in the appreciation of your drawing and painting by freehand.

The observation of the object or scene that you are trying to draw is vitally important to reproducing this on the canvas, for example, plein air painting. I talk more about this on my quora post below.

I will post a video tutorial on more on this drawing so you can see it for yourself and take away important lessons. You may also want to visit my Udemy page for more free courses on using the Paintology drawing app.
