I have always been intrigued by manga and how so many people are avid followers or artists that love this genre. I decided it was high time that I tried my hand in manga drawing. This is a 3 part quick tutorial on how to draw manga on the Paintology app.

If you follow this tutorial with me and you have never done or always wanted to draw manga, then this is for you. I have not done any editing or had any practice before these drawings. This is so that I can relate to anyone who could make the same mistakes and I don't feel at all embarrassed to make those mistakes. After all, one learns from making mistakes. So let's get started.

As often is the case, before I embark on something new, I tend to get some research under my belt. So I looked at some youtubers and some pdf downloads to see how to draw a manga face. My findings were very intriguing to say the least, since I am somewhat comfortable with portrait drawings, my initial thought were, how hard can this be? It turns out there is a science and method behind manga drawing. Here is what I learnt.

  1. It's all about proportions, if you don't get this right, your drawings won't look good. I found this out when I created this 3 part drawing.
  2. There is very subtle difference between a male and female manga.
  3. The eyes are naturally larger than real humans and there are no substantial details regarding the nose and lips.

Oddly enough, all of this somehow comes out naturally and you are never inclined to think that a manga character is somewhat alien. They are just a different race of humans.

As I venture into this manga space, I am beginning to wake up and realize what all the buzz is about. Although, I am nowhere near my journey into the manga world, I can see myself discovering and enjoying that medium as I continue to practice.

The very first drawing I did on my galaxy tablet using Paintology is shown below.

You can see the youtube video below...

https://youtu.be/0RdbrO-5E28

Interesting enough, the drawing looked very different to the reference image. Not because it was technically way off but more that the face did not quite match up to the original. The face looked more peculiar in the sense that it did not have the warmth or the smooth bodied face of the original. I used the 'chalk' brush tool and thought that I maybe be better off with the charcoal since the lines of a manga character are usually precise and clean.

The technique for drawing the face was a mix of methods that I picked up from having read an introductory book plus some youtube videos. Firstly, you want to draw a circle for the head and then draw concentric circles below the equater line. Make sure to add the face axis line down the middle. Depending on which direction the face is facing, you can adjust this accordingly.

Use the concentric circles to place your eyes, eyebrows, lips, mouth and nose. Start with a mid-level opacity (hardness/density) setting of the brush to overlay darker color for the final going over the drawing. This will emphasize the face and the features along with the head of hair.

Hope you enjoyed this blog post. Let's move to the second attempt at drawing manga.

Landscapes are the easiest subject to draw or paint. I would encourage any beginner or advanced artists to just continue to draw/paint landscapes whenever they can. There are some reasons for this which I will outline below.

  • The subject has no 'strict' sense of the strokes required for the final rendition. Unlike other subjects like faces, animals, objects etc. landscapes are more forgiving. They allow you far more creative expression than one thinks.
  • It is a subject that allows creative expression and you will hone your skills and continue to improve upon it. The landscape allows you to create highly expressive drawings/paintings and can swing from realistic to semi-abstract. You have control over how much color, tones, mood that you want in you final drawing.
  • It really does improve your technical skills when it comes to tonal values, colors, perspective etc.
  • Most people admire photographs of landscapes, the vast space that it encompasses, mother nature and the natural beauty all around us.

Above are some reasons for creating landscape drawings and paintings but it there maybe plenty of other reasons that people can relate to. It is no doubt that it is the single most subject of creation that many have on their walls of their homes.

In this simple drawing of a landscape, we will go about creating the following using the Paintology app.

An easy to do landscape on the Paintology app.

Drawing for beginners can be a real challenge, especially when they also feel that they cannot draw the basic shapes. This is not surprising since they have not practiced or gone through a learning process that can help them get improve.

In this tutorial I show you how easily you can practice with the Paintology app and monitor your progress through the saved drawings. For this exercise, I encourage you to get a stylus for your tablet or phone and use that to draw. Download the Paintology app if you have not done so, so you can use the app to draw and save your drawings. The video also shows how to use the app to follow the video and do your own drawings.

Continuing on the beginners drawing series of the circles, we will now try to draw boxes. This in fact is an easier tutorial than drawing a circle, so I would recommend complete beginners to do this exercise first.

Beginners boxes drawing on the Paintology app.

As before in the circle drawing tutorial, I show you how to use the same methods for drawing boxes. Drawing these shapes consistently helps you to improve your hand and eye coordination. Do these exercises if you are having trouble doing any kind of shapes. I will bring more shapes to draw and gradually add a bit more degree of complexity to help you improve.

For the above drawing, I used similar technique of loading the Paintology app with a reference image shown below.

Reference image used for the drawing tutorial.

You can follow this tutorial from the Paintology app which will have the reference image along with a youtube video insruction as well as the settings required for the pen.

It makes sense to do the drawing of the boxes in a simple single stroke of the pen which consists of only one of the edges of the box. I show this in the video tutorial, but to get more accuracy, we learnt that using smaller strokes will allow for better accuracy of the line edge. This is the normal method applied by experienced artists. In the first case, the line can be skewed nevertheless, it can be acceptable for some drawings. In the shorter strokes of building up the line, one can achieve accuracy but at the expense of more 'frills' around the line. One can also use the eraser tool to remove those frills.

The video of this tutorial is shown below. In the next tutorial, we will follow the same approach as the circle tutorial and do freehand drawing of the boxes.

In this drawing, we use the reference image directly on the canvas so we can draw by referring to this image. This is different to the traced method where we needed to alternate between the traced image at the back and our drawing canvas.

In this approach of drawing, we have a stationary image to refer to on the same canvas. This brings about a different learning approach where you are more focused on the image and less distracted by the tools. This is a good way for beginner/intermediate artists to build up their drawing skills.

The Android Paintology app is a versatile tool that has been designed to develop your drawing skills rapidly. No matter a beginner or advanced, the app is powerful enough to meet all your needs.

In this portrait drawing of a woman's face, I use the triangulation method to pinpoint the eyes, nose lips even though we have the traced image. In this way, you can visualize the shape of the triangles required for freehand drawing.

In this drawing of a portrait using the Paintology app, I show you how easily you can create 'realistic' effects for drawing a face. By keeping to black and white we have less to worry about the colors and more importantly can focus on the values.

The technique of using values and opacity has been applied to this drawing to give it a final realistic look.

When drawing with Paintology, don't be afraid to experiment and try out the brushes and see what kind of effects you get. Even if you can't use the effects on the present drawing, you could find yourself using it for another drawing. As with everything, practice, practice and more practice.

Although the thought of drawing everyday may seem daunting, it doesn't come across like that if you are interested and passionate.

Architectural buildings are a good subject for drawing and they require good control of the pencil/pen to do the straight lines of the buildings and roof.

I found this reference image which seemed like a good subject to draw. It didn't have the intricate details of many architectures and therefore was easier to draw and also within the hour.

You shouldn't be afraid to experiment, like the way I did here. For example, I added some interesting foreground to give the drawing more depth i.e. the road leading to the house.

I use the triangulation method to draw a portrait and how using this system allows you to achieve consistent results. For more information on this method please visit our post 'How to Draw Portraits Effectively'.

The triangulation method allows you to create a set of triangles on the face where you can position all the prominent features of the face. For example, the eyebrows, eye levels, nose tip, lips and chin.

In this portrait drawing, I used the lineart and color to create the effect on this drawing. Combined with the traced image, the drawing has been produced with speed and any intermediate artist should be able to accomplish this drawing in under an hour.

Tracing method is an ideal way to get into portrait drawings where proportions are paramount to the final portrait. Every artist has a different way of looking at art and their proportions are sometimes skewed by what they see. In the traced method, you can see where your freehand drawings shifts away from the norm and therefore make the necessary adjustment. For me, I had a tendency to get the eyes and nose top narrower than usual.

Many folks are defeated by the idea of drawing even before they start. Little do they know that they are missing out on one of the largest pastime in the world. There is a good reason why many people pursue the art of painting and drawing and it does not always stem from ability.

In my opinion, many people young or old do drawing because it is fun and extremely rewarding. The benefits to a healthy mind cannot be underestimated. Anyone who engages in a piece of drawing finds themselves lost in the moment with an enormous sense of satisfaction and pleasure. Wouldn't you want that for yourself!

Now you can with the new drawing tool called Paintology.

Paintology challenges you to rethink about your idea of drawing. Many people are defeated even before they start and it's no wonder that people get the shakes as soon as they pick up a pencil. Don't worry, even artists go through the same feeling. But the difference is that the artist likes to go to the unknown and is not affected by what can be done or not done, they simply do it.

If you want to get over this hurdle that has kept you from this domain that brings such self-satisfaction, you should try the strokes tutorial by Paintology. This new approach to drawing cannot be found anywhere else as it is an exclusive development to Paintology (patent pending). Here is the video tutorial to get you started. You will need the Paintology app for this tutorial.

Many portrait artists have heard of the Loomis method for drawing heads which are based on spherical shapes and concentric lines to define the head. The basic building block enables artists to get proportions right when drawing a head. However, this method is not used when it comes to portrait drawings.

In this post, I look at the Loomis method for attempting to 'trace' over real drawings using the Paintology app. In this way, we can compare how well it works in practice. Although, it is understood that the Loomis method does not define the exact face proportions of any real head, it only attempts to define an 'average' head. The idea is that by taking the 'average' head one can work out the proportional requirements and changes to match the individual head.

Fig. 1 shows the actual heads where we are going to apply the Loomis method.

Fig. 1 Three heads in different orientation to test the Loomis method of drawing a head.

The heads in Fig. 1 are orientated in various positions so that we can test the validity of the Loomis method.

Fig. 2 shows the heads drawn using the Loomis technique. The heads were easily drawn due to the trace feature available for the Paintology app. In drawing the sphere, I was careful to cover all of the cranium feature and then drew lines to intersect the middle of the eyes, lower nose tip and the middle of the lips.

Fig. 2 The three heads adopting the Loomis method.

To get a better idea of the drawn heads compared to the actual heads, I set the opacity of the trace to about half way in order to produce the image in Fig. 3. This is easy to do with Paintology where you can adjust the slider to move from the complete underlying image and to your drawing canvas.

Fig. 3 The traced image of the heads along with the actual heads.

The conclusions I can derive from this experiment is that there is some proximity to the Loomis method of drawing the actual head. In particular, the nose top is well matched to the lower part of the sphere but only for frontal and slightly side views. The side profile is somewhat different to the cranium sphere and there is no representation with the first two images. When looked at the 1/3 rule for the eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips and chin, there is distinct differences for this particular face. If one wanted to use the Loomis method to replicate the real faces, it would not work.

Loomis method is only good to draw virtual faces and to draw a true like for like drawing, it is not particularly useful as the variations in the rules depart too much from the actual image. However, Loomis method is great to draw virtual caricatures for say in a comic strip, story books etc.

To draw a true like for like of a portrait image, one needs to resort to their trained eyes or 'pencil' measurements of the live model. You will almost always see expert portrait artists utilize these approaches rather than using the arbitration method of Loomis and other 3D techniques.

I have been working with a new technique which I call the 'triangulation' method for drawing accurate representation of heads. Please refer to this new post on this technique and for a video of a drawing using this method, see below.

This is a third attempt at drawing a manga face on the Paintology app. The techniques for drawing a face is somewhat similar to ways that have been taught in drawing classes ie. sphere for a head followed by intersectional lines for the eyes, lips, mouth, ears etc.

You may want to check out Part 1 and Part 2 of drawing a manga face.

Draw a Manga Face - Part 1

Draw a Manga Face - Part 2

What I have learnt from my last 2 attempts were that the positioning of the eyes was vital to make the whole face look natural. However, my next tasks would be to draw the face in different angles and tilts so that I can continue to improve on my manga drawing.

Here is the 3rd attempt of the face...

Draw a Manga Face - Part 3

You will find the youtube video here...

https://youtu.be/mlMt9kXVkE0

In this drawing, I spent a few more minutes refining the eyes and hair. I can conclude that my positioning of the eyes are getting better as well as the overall look of the face. It is surprising with a few simple strokes one can get a very different expression of the face. You can be the judge of that.

I hope to bring you more manga drawings as this subject has already tickled my interest. Please feel free to make comments below and happy drawing!

This is a continuation from the previous post of the 'Draw a Manga Face - Part 1'. On that post we learnt a few methods to draw manga faces at different angles by sketching out a sphere for the head and then drawing concentric circles for the eyes, nose and mouth. It is a method that is adopted by many artists and will be modifying this to fit the Paintology drawing application.

In this drawing, I have tried to pay more attention to the concentric sphere and circles so that I get better placement of the eyes. In my previous drawing, the eyes were off in position and needed to rub it out to get to the right place. In context of the drawing, anything can be out of place if we don't pay attention to the relative elements of the face. This becomes even more so when we draw the manga caricature in many slides for example a storyline. However, the idea is that with practice you will get better. Gregory Manchess a popular illustrator was told that he had it in him all the time (talent) and he would reply, no, it was only through persistence and practice he got to where he is now.

Here is the second version of the manga face, keep in mind that I have never drawn manga before but excited at the prospect of what is to follow.

Manga face, 2nd attempt with Paintology.

Here is the youtube video...

https://youtu.be/0IPfexqPcA4

If you compare my first attempt with this second attempt, you will notice that the face is glowing more without the 'sinister' look of the first one. We will attempt another drawing to see if we can improve on this. Here is the link to my 3rd drawing of the manga face.

In this drawing we do something slightly different from the traced mode of drawing in Paintology. We have a template with the drawing we want to do and load this as an overlaid image onto our canvas. It is quite easy to do and all you need to do is use a photo editor to put the image onto the top left corner and then save image and load into canvas. In this tutorial, we have already created the apple overlaid image for you so you can start drawing right away! There are advantages to this method of learning drawing since you have the reference image always in sight. However, unlike traced image you need to create your own forms and shapes. It's a bit like having a photo in front of you whilst you draw. We encourage you to draw using both methods and it will really help you get your drawing skills up. Follow the daily tutorials of Paint along with Fred and you will have drawing skills under your belt like no other! In this drawing I demonstrate the hardness and density settings of the brush tool in Paintology to create a focus and unfocused image, giving depth to the final drawing. The hardness & density settings are the tools on Paintology that allows you to create a 'toned' image in comparison to a flat image. This is because the brush will behave just like you are pressing hard or soft on the paper with a pencil. Go ahead and give it a try and check out all the other video tutorials. Here we focus on using tools to create the subtle shadings that are required to draw an eye. You can do shading in one of two ways using the Paintology app: 1. You can select a mid-tone from the color palette and and move the cursor to a lighter or a darker tone on the popup color box. 2. You can select a mid-tone and use the hardness and density settings to get the various tones.
