For this diamond tutorial, we use the trace mode of drawing where we load the original diamond image and use this for reference to do our own drawing. The approach is fairly simple where we use the loaded reference image to pick out the underlying tones and apply to our drawing. In addition, we also use the straight lines drawing tool to do the straight edges of the diamond.

We use two brushes, the line and the shade that are ideal for doing this drawing. The shade brush is used to do the quick block coloring of the diamond facets.

Approach to the Drawing

A video of this drawing is available for this tutorial. It will shows the steps to recreating this diamond to your drawing canvas. The recommendation is to first look over the video and see how the drawing is done. There are no exact or specific ways to go about this drawing but there are essential steps that you should follow and these include:

  • Enable the background to be dark as in the original image; this is easily done with the background tool when you first start the drawing.
  • Use the straight line tool to draw the outline of the diamond including the sharp edges of the facets. Pick a medium gray tone to do this.
  • Use the shade brush with a larger brush size to do the blocking of each segments. Alternate between the image and your drawing to get a good idea of the areas to draw by using the tracer bar.
  • Continue building up the drawing through multiple paths. This is how we essentially draw with paper and pencil and it is no different to drawing with the Paintology app.
