Sunsets are a great way to get into painting since they don’t require much technical competence in the use of brush or stylus. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when doing this kind of painting.

The details of the scenes of a landscape are very different depending on the time of day. For example, the daytime scene of the Serengeti landscape will contain details of trees, color, foreground and far distant objects.

When you tackle this drawing, try not to pay too much attention to the smaller details at first. Do the larger areas to get comfortable with the tools and think of the overall drawing that will finally appear. This is an artistic way to approach a painting or a drawing so you don’t get bogged down with tiny details initially. It is a common mistake with most beginners and with practice you will eventually get the hang of it.

As explained earlier, the painting of a sunset will need a different approach to a painting of the same scene during the day. However, what we do need to pay attention to are the silhouette images that make for the overall look of the scene. You will see that the eyes will focus on the edges of the sharp contrast between the orange sky and the darker objects such as the giraffe, plants and trees. This means we need to make that part of the area as accurate as possible. So when doing this drawing, try to get the edges as smooth and rounded as possible.
