A tribute to the recent passing of Sinead O’Connor

The recent passing of the singer Sinead O’Connor made headline news.

Her iconic song, ‘Nothing Compares to You’, was a haunting melodramatic song that still sends shivers through anyone listening to it.

I thought I would do my bit of making a portrait drawing on my phone with the Paintology drawing app of course.

Here is the final drawing…

I first added the background color of a mid gray tone. Remember, you need to select the background color first before you do the drawing. The approach is exactly like doing a painting or a drawing with traditional mediums.

I used a broader charcoal brush to lay down the colors of the face, head and neck. Naturally, I reduced the size of the brush to lay down the ‘first pass’ of the smaller details such as the eyes, nose and lips.

Then I continued to do some form of ‘blending’ to reduce the choppy effect of the face.

Finally, I decided to stop doing any more to the drawing and leave it at a state that seemed reasonable. Normally, I would try to blend more and try to achieve some form of semi-realism but decided against it. I wanted to leave it as something in between a creation and a photo, to make it look surreal and not a photo. Think of it as a half way house to one’s thinking process (of the artist) and the final process.
