My daughter is very fond of kittens and I thought I would do a drawing here for everyone.

You can take this drawing as far as you want and try to recreate something that is realistic depending on your drawing skills. However, don’t get frustrated if you are unable to achieve the same drawing that I did here. It takes some practice to draw like this.

Drawing with Paintology requires you to understand how the brush tools work and creating a drawing ‘stroke’ that you think resembles the original reference image. This is a fundamental drawing and painting techniques that are used by all artists. With one brush or pencil, they are able to create amazing drawings or paintings. In the same way Paintology works like that, trying to get you better with drawing skills. Hence you can do much with just one brush of the Paintology app.

To make good drawings, you need to get a handle on the tools. You can compare with traditional artists who work with mediums like oils, acrylics, watercolors, pencils, pastels, graphite etc. The latitude of drawing and painting in the traditional medium is far smaller than the traditional medium but yet we have witnessed fantastic artworks throughout the last centuries.

Learn the basic tools as well as you can

When I speak about ‘latitude’ I mean to say that in traditional mediums there are limitations to what you can do with the materials compared to digital drawing. For example, when you are doing oil painting, you only have a few brush tools and you cannot ‘undo’ the strokes you put down like the way you can with digital. Also, the traditional medium such as drawing has a limitation of how much strokes you can lay down before there is no tooth in the drawing canvas. However, with digital medium there is no limitation of tooth and you can extend the strokes and opacity to fit your needs to the drawing or painting.

The above applies very well to all digital drawing apps including the Paintology app. Usually beginners make the mistake that there should be plenty of brushes and tools in the app for proper beginning. This is a complete myth and you will see from the video below that I have used basically 2 brushes to make the kitten drawing.

What you should consider when drawing as a beginner is to master the tools that you have as much as you can. In this way, you will extend the capability of just the one brush and apply it effectively for your drawing or painting. As an example in the kitten drawing, I use the shade brush and the gray scale to mimic the the right shading of the kitten. The line brush tool is used to create the more opaque features of the drawing. These include the eyes and some of the hairs that needs to be replicated into the drawing. Also, you will see that the rear of the kitten is diffused and so it makes sense to use the shade brush or the line tool with lower opacity.

Hopefully the above points with a video will demonstrate to you that it takes more than tools to create a good drawing. If you are a beginner in drawing or have worked with traditional medium, it is easy to dismiss the digital medium without giving it a good try. Like all different mediums it takes some patience to understand how the tools work together to allow you to get your vision onto the canvas or the digital pad.
